COMM359: Interactive Multimedia III

This course provides students the ability to move beyond the traditional models of information distribution using image, sound, motion and text. The course introduces the fundamentals of communicating through digital interfaces with an audience. Topics include digital imaging, creating effective interactive projects, models of information structure, analysis of design problems and distribution models. Theories of communication, learning, human-centered design and project evaluation are discussed.

Course Goals
  • To demonstrate a fundamental understanding of analyzing, designing, developing, and evaluating web design projects
  • To demonstrate individual proficiency with the different types of technology for web design and development
  • To demonstrate proficiency of the application of message & content design to the development of web productions
  • To demonstrate proficiency of intermediate graphic design skills required to produce web design projects
  • To demonstrate proficiency with a variety of components that can be integrated into a web site project
  • To demonstrate proficiency of current software applications available for web development along with a basic proficiency for using the applications

Course Objectives
  • Students will be able to analyze and evaluate web sites in relation to user interface (UI), user experience (UX), information architecture (IA) and content
  • Students will be able to create web site planning documentation for clients
  • Students will be able to express web terminology and principles both written and orally
  • Students will be proficient in the use and application of HTML/HTML5 and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS/CSS3)
  • Students will be able to demonstrate the process of message design to a multimedia project by completing assigned individual or group projects
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to incorporate intermediate graphic design skills in the development of several assigned multimedia projects, either as individuals or team members
  • Students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in incorporation of a variety of media types into assigned projects
  • Students will use current software applications to develop a web site portfolio to demonstrate a fundamental understanding of course concepts

Week 4: Fundamentals of HTML/HTML5
Week 5 - 8: Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
Week 9: Spring Break

Week 10: Adding Interactivity (JavaScript)
Week 11: HTML5/Responsive Design
Week 12: HTML5/Responsive Design

Week 13 - 15: Web portfolio Design
Week 16: Web portfolio Design Presentations
